Yahoo down: Email breaches hit thousands of users

Downdetector, a site that provides power failure information, had received more than 5,000 reports of issues related to Yahoo Mail by 2.am ET. Hundreds of users also reported problems with other Yahoo services, according to Downdetector.

The problem was resolved later in the day, but the company provided few details of the power outage.

"Most services are back online. This is a technical issue that affected our services," Yahoo tweeted from its official customer care account at 9.30am

Most of the complaints originated in Europe, with a strong concentration in the United Kingdom, but a Twitter user complained that Yahoo had also been in Australia for hours. Several users complained on Twitter that emails they sent during the power outage were "missing" or lost.

Yahoo's customer service page – help.yahoo.com – also went down for a while and showed the message, "Thank you for your patience. Our engineers are working quickly to resolve the problem."

In 2013, a data breach at Yahoo came at the expense of the accounts of the 3 billion users it once had. Yahoo parent company Oath, a subsidiary of Verizon ( VZ ) did not provide details on the cause of Thursday's power failure, saying only it was "aware of a technical issue" that affecting services.
