What's open, what's closed on Veterans Day (s)
Veterans Day 2018 is unique for a few reasons.
First and most importantly, it marks 100 years since the end of the First World War; Secondly, it falls on a Sunday, which means it is being observed both on Sundays and Mondays.
This makes it a little difficult to find out which stores and services will be closed in the next two days, but here's a quick guide to what's available and what's not in Minnesota.
Public Offices: Most federal, state and local offices will be closed on Monday, including US postal services and US court buildings.
Liquor Stores: Since Minnesota liquor stores can operate on Sundays, whether they are open today, it's up to them and the same goes for Monday. Call in advance or check online before you leave.
Shopping malls and shops : Almost all malls and stores will be open Sunday and Monday, with many (including Mall of America) offering special offers, promotions and events
Schools : Sorry, children … most public schools, including those in Minneapolis and St. Paul's school district will be open as usual on Monday and the same applies to the University of Minnesota.
Metro Transit : City buses and the blue and green lines will work normally both days. The only reduced service taking place in November will be on Thanksgiving.
Parking meters : A couple of breaks are coming in the way of public parking. There are two days of free parking in St. Paul (according to the city's website, neither Sunday nor Monday will have meter enforcement), while Minneapolis will have free parking on Sunday (but meters are enforced Monday as usual).
Garbage collection: If you are in Minneapolis or St. Paul, there is no change in service if Monday is your usual day of collection. Register now: Subscribe to our daily newsletter
