VW I.D. Buggy is a light green electric smile machine

In a move guaranteed to delight half of you and lethal offend the other half, Volkswagen still revealed Another electric concept car. It is called I.D. Buggy, which is a great name because it is an electric buggy. The inspiration is, of course, dunebuggies from the 1960s, which were built from ubiquitous VW beetles. Here it is given a futuristic face lift. Instead of the venerable flat-four engine on the back, Buggy gets VW's new MEB architecture, which provides lithium ion power packing and electric engine setup.

MEB is the toy box for parts and software that VW will use to create a new range of electric vehicles. Over the last few years, the company has discovered itself for the life of diesel, and doubled its electrification in response. Directions E was the answer, which promises 50 new battery EVs from the VW group as a whole by 2030. Porsche and Audi work on a separate architecture called PPE, which will appear in larger cars like the next Macan SUV. But for something a little less, MEB is where it is.

At VW, the brand (not the VW group, the corporate chief) is the entire electronic mobility, which happens under I.D. Banner. The first I.D. Production cars will be aerodynamic hatchbacks that are being produced in Europe late 2019. Unfortunately, these hatchbacks are unlikely to be available in North America. Here in the US, VW's Chattanooga factory in Tennessee will start building a production version of I.D. Cross crossover in 2020.

But the vehicle that really gets people busy has been I.D. Buzz. VW has played with retro-modern concepts inspired by the classic Type 2 (eg the bus, camper, hatchback etc.), but with Buzz, the company will finally sell them in 2022. I imagine a vocal contingent will ask VW to give Buggy the same treatment. I am a particular fan of the weatherproof interior, due to a lot of technical clothing.

The technical specifications, as they are, give Buggy a range of 155 miles (250 km) on the wildy optimistic WLTP test procedure. The car is powered by a single 201 hp (150 kW) electric rear engine, although it is possible with a double engine version, VW says.

VW says "Buggy's modular construction allows the composite upper body to be detached from the MEB chassis, opening a world of opportunities for third-party manufacturers, as the original Meyers Manx set made for the first bugs." feeling, but you have to put it into production to make it happen, VW.
