VMware purchases its own, serverless security boot

Enterprise software company VMware on Tuesday confirmed it has purchased Intrinsic, a small security startup in San Francisco. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The acquisition represents another step in VMware's embrace of cloud technologies, despite VMware's legacy of offering products that companies can use to distribute software in their own data centers.

Intrinsic tried to help software developers safely print on serverless computing, an increasingly popular approach that involves automatically triggering a system to work when certain things happen. Intrinsics technology allows users to set guidelines for how these systems can work.

"This acquisition brings us unique expertise and technology as we look to extend the VMware AppDefense platform to the public cloud," said a spokesman.

VMware shares have almost doubled since forming a large partnership with Amazon Web Services, the market-leading public cloud provider, in 201[ads1]6. Intrinsics technology works with serverless offers from Amazon, as well as Microsoft and Google.

Intrinsic was founded in 2015 and was formerly known as GitStar. The startup has about 10 employees, according to LinkedIn, and raised capital from venture investors including Andreessen Horowitz, First Round Capital and NEA.

Last week, VMware revealed that it was in discussions with Pivotal about a business combination. Earlier this year, VMware purchased Bitnami, a privately held company that made it easy to deploy preliminary software on top of cloud-based servers.

"I have a good capacity to get," VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger told CNBC in an interview last month.
