Virgin Galactic, Under Armor Aerospace Collection for Space Tourists
NEW YORK – Astronauts meeting athleisure.
Under Armor on Wednesday, the space suits revealed what makes people wear aircraft to the edge of space with Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic.
The companies are collaborating on a full line of space apparel for Virgin Galactic, which the companies claim is the first collection "made specifically for private astronauts." The collection includes the space suit, a workout suit, footwear and even a limited edition jacket.

Virgin Galactic's spacecraft will carry as many as six passengers, along with the two pilots, to the edge of the room. The spacecraft is dropped from a jet-powered aircraft at about 40,000 feet before it fires off the rocket engine and reaches over three times the speed of sound as it climbs up over the Earth's atmosphere. Then the spacecraft and passengers float there weightlessly for about 10 minutes, before gliding back down to land on Earth much like a traditional aircraft.
A ticket for a Virgin Galactic aircraft goes for about $ 250,000 per person.
Under Armor's space suit design
The design of the space attire included input from astronauts, pilots, doctors, stylists and more, Virgin Galactic said. Each space suit will be personalized to each Virgin Galactic passenger and will include national flags and name tags.

For Under Armor, the aerospace initiative fits into the broader push to sell "performance" equipment, such as sweat-wicking shirts and shorts. It sets the company apart from the likes of Nike, Adidas and Lululemon, who have built their brands more around certain sports, such as basketball, soccer or yoga. Under Armor has seen sales suffer recently in North America, with some analysts saying it's because the company has stayed so focused on "performance" and missed other trends. But CEO Kevin Plank has argued that Under Armor will remain true to its core.
The first commercial spaceflight next year
Virgin Galactic is testing its spacecraft, with only a few aircraft left. The company had a backlog of 603 customers at the end of June, many of whom have been waiting years for their chance to fly. And in the time since the last two test flights reached the edge of space, Virgin Galactic says it has received interest from more than 3,000 potential customers.
The company plans to start flying commercial flights by 2020, with Branson expected to fly on the first.
