Want to be happy? A top psychologist says to stop & # 39; social distancing & # 39; and do this instead

It is nothing new to say that these try times – o otherwise, to add that the social distance treatment we have prescribed culturally to the pandemic has had some unfortunate effects on mental health.

But now a top psychologist studying the science of happiness at the University of North Carolina has come up with a short study, embracing a simple solution that I think will resonate with many people.

In short, a brief semantic change she suggests can have a positive impact on behaviors that lead to good mental health and happiness ̵

1; while still achieving the physical distance goals we have learned are necessary.

Dr. Barbara Lee Fredrickson is a psychology professor and head of the Positive Emotions and Psychophysiology Lab at UNC.

Recently, her team surveyed 600 Americans to ask about their daily activities, correlating them with the degree to which they experience positive or negative. feelings.

The results, which I will post below, are not so surprising. But that's what Fredrickson and her colleague, Michael M. Prinzing, a fellow working in the lab, advised as a result (a change in nomenclature, really) that can make you really stop and think.

First, the results of their study. The team at UNC found that people who described having spent part of that day before being asked to do the following things are more likely to report feelings of negative emotions:

  • Browsing social media
  • Interacting with people purely through chat or text

"Interacting with others doesn't seem to help much when you actually can't see or hear the people you are communicating with. This was a useful wake-up call for us," Frederickson and Prinzing wrote. [19659004] The following activities were more likely to be associated with those who reported positive emotions:

  • Exercise
  • Self-care (for example, taking part in hobbies or relaxing)
  • Participating in spiritual activities (prayer or meditation)
  • Interact with other people, especially through video or face-to-face interactions
  • Go out of their way to help other people

"Most people know that these things are important But it is especially so these days when we stay home to slow down the spread of the coronavirus, "Frederickson said.

So how do we encourage people to participate in the second type of activity at the expense of the first? An easy way might be to change the words we use, no longer calling it "social distance," but instead: "physical distance and social solidarity."

Personally, I have to try it. And it can make a lot of sense for the people you lead in your business as well.

The less you can emphasize distance – and instead emphasize physical separation but social connection in your language – the better things can be for your employees. [19659004] And the more you can encourage employees and others to do things on the positive list – to train, connect with others, engage in self-care and spirituality and help others – the better it can be for them (and by extension your business.)

We may not be able to change the whole world, but we can certainly influence the people we lead. And if a small change in terminology and attitude can have an effect, it seems to me that it's definitely worth a try.
