After almost 50 years, Southwest Airlines shared only very good news

The last year has been so difficult for so many people. In the business world, no industry has faced greater challenges than airlines.

Thus, it was not a shock that Southwest Airlines in October warned that it might have to take a serious step that it had not resorted to before in its 49-year history: employee furloughs.

Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly issued the warning in a video message to Southwest employees:

  • First, he promised that he would not take any salaries until the end of 2021
, and that other top Southwest executives would take pay cuts up to 20 percent.
  • He then said that non-unions from southwestern employees would take temporary 10 percent pay cuts as well, but that in return, employees would not risk getting through the end of 2021.
  • Finally, he said he asked southwestern unions – including pilots, flight attendants and others – also to take 10 percent pay cuts, in exchange for the same promise of no layoffs or furloughs, also until the end of 2021. Now, while I feel for anyone being laid off or furloughed in almost all cases, it made me think of other tough times in the airline's history, and how Sørvest had reacted at the time.

For example, almost 20 years ago, airlines faced a new crisis in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Grouping Southwest with a small group of other companies that refused to consider layoffs or furloughs, BusinessWeek (now Bloomberg) wrote:

"There is no altruism at work. Rather, managers at companies without layoffs claim that maintaining their ranks even in terrible times breeds fierce loyalty, higher productivity and the innovation needed to enable them to turn around when the economy recovers. "

And as the Washington Post remarked, in the same time frame:

" Yes, this is Southwest Airlines, which is almost flying forward in the wake of the 11th terrorist attacks. September, no layoffs, no major plane crashes … no serious predictions from honchos about impending bankruptcy, just smiles and free peanuts and huge corny jokes is. "

Actually, the peanuts are gone, but the non-redundancy policy persisted.

Southwest actually went so far as to issue the statutory WARN notice in November with advice on specific future redundancies. When I covered this on it time, I ended by writing:

"I would like to be able to write in a few months that Southwest managed to keep its 49 years no-furlough streak going. "

A few months later, surely, enough, the situation was resolved – not because of union concessions or Kelly going back, but because (as unlikely as it seemed in October or November), the government actually passed a new stimulus bill, including money to the airlines.

The new stimulus bill that passed the Senate this weekend also includes extra money for the airlines.

(Southwest is not alone in avoiding furloughs during the pandemic; Delta Air Lines did it too. United and American turned around 15,000 employees each during this time frame.)

This is an example of why I always suggest that business leaders in any industry should pay attention to the airlines. They are commodities, selling the same product and trying to find ways to differentiate

Sometimes it's by focusing on squares. Sometimes it's by adding an extra empty seat in economy, or adjusting other small points in pr. the ice models.

Sometimes, at least in the case of the Southwest, it is by finding an added benefit of employment and retention by trumpeting a half-century story without having any involuntary cuts in jobs.

So ask yourself, what does that equate to in your business? How do you add an extra inch to your seats, metaphorically? Or else, what is the stretch you have that you can talk a little higher about?

What's the extra, not easily quantifiable selling point you can use with employees, prospects and customers – the "positive negative" that you may not even think about right away, but which erased your reputation?

It may not always be financially sound in the short term, but it can be very sensible when it comes to reputation.

After nearly 50 years in the Southwest, there is welcome news that they managed to keep the stretch going. And for the sake of employees, American companies and the economy, I'm glad I get to write about it.

Opinions expressed by Inc.com columnists here are their own, not Inc .com.

This is a story about Southwest Airlines - one I wanted to write for one while it actually is, and one that illustrates a key point from my free e-book, Flying Business Class: 12 Rules for Leaders From the US Airlines .

n

The last year has been so difficult for so many people. In the business world, no industry has faced greater challenges than airlines.

n

Thus, it was not a shock that Southwest Airlines warned in October that it had to take a serious step that it had not resorted to before in its 49-year history: employee furrows.

n

Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly issued the warning, in a video message to Southwest employees:

n

    t

  • First, he promised he would not take any pay until the end of 2021, and that other top southwestern leaders would take pay cuts of up to 20 percent.
  • t

  • He then said that non-union southwest employees would take temporary 10 percent pay cuts as well, but that in return for that, employees would not risk getting through the end of 2021.
  • t

  • Finally, he said that he asked southwestern unions - including pilots, flight attendants and others - also to take 10 percent wage cuts, in exchange for the same promise of no layoffs or furloughs, also through the end of 2021.

n

Overall, Kelly said his goal was to avoid furloughs, but unless the US government stepped in, it would be up to the unions to meet him. I thought this was very wise; he was able to advocate against the furloughs, but no doubt put the responsibility for them, if they happened, on the unions.

n

Now, while I feel for everyone being laid off or furloughed in almost every case, it has made me think of other tough times in the airline's history, and how Southwest had reacted at the time.

n

For example, almost 20 years ago, airlines faced a new crisis in the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Group Southwest with a small group of other companies that refused to consider layoffs or furloughs, BusinessWeek (now Bloomberg) wrote:

n

"There is no altruism at work. Rather, executives of companies without dismissal claim that maintaining their ranks even in terrible times creates strong loyalty, higher productivity and the innovation needed to enable them to strike back when the economy recovers. "

n

And as Washington Post noted, at the same time eframe:

n

"Yes, this is Southwest Airlines, flying almost blithely in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. No layoffs, no major plane crashes ... no serious predictions from the company's honchos the bankruptcy. Just smiles and free peanuts and hugely corny jokes. "

n

Actually the peanuts are gone, but the non-redundancy policy persisted.

n

Southwest actually went so far as to issue statutory WARN announcements in November, with advice When I covered this at the time, I ended by writing:

n

"I would like to be able to write in a few months that Southwest managed to keep it 49 years long the stretch without walking. "

n

A few months later, certainly, the situation was resolved - not because of concessions by trade unions, or Kelly backed down, but because (as unlikely as it seemed in October or November), the government actually adopted another stimulus bill, including money for the airlines.

n

The new stimulus bill that passed the Senate this weekend also includes extra money for airlines.

n

(Southwest is not alone in having Delta Air Lines also managed to do so during the pandemic; however, United and American each lost about 15,000 employees during that time frame.)

n

This is one example of why I always suggest that business leaders in every industry should pay attention to the airlines. They are commodities, selling the same product and trying to find ways to stand out indefinitely.

n

Sometimes it's by focusing on routes. e r it by adding an extra empty seat in economy, or adjusting other small points in the pricing models.

n

Sometimes, at least in the case of Southwest, it is by finding an added benefit of employment and retention by trumpeting a half-century story without having any involuntary job cuts.

n

So, ask yourself, what does that equate to in your business? How do you add an extra inch to your seats, metaphorically? Or else, what is the stretch you have that you can talk a little higher about?

n

What's the extra, not easily quantifiable selling point you can use with employees, prospects and customers- -The "positive negative " that you may not even think about immediately, but that refined your reputation ?

n

It may not always be financially sound in the short term, but it can be very sensible when it comes to reputation.

n

After almost 50 years in the Southwest, it is welcome news that they were able to keep the stretch going. And for the sake of employees, American companies and the economy, I'm glad I get to write about it.
