United flight flying off the runway at Newark airport
No injuries were reported when United Flight 627 – originating from Denver – landed at 1 on Runway 22 Left and then shot off the left side of the track, according to the FAA.
United Airlines said in a statement that the plane "experienced several flat tires on landing" and "was disabled."
None of the 166 passengers on board were taken to hospitals, and those without injuries refused medical assistance, said the airline . Damage to the aircraft was assessed.
"We are in close contact with the FAA and airport authorities and are working fast to remove disabled aircraft safely, so airport operations can return to normal," the airline said.
Newark airport later tweeted that the planes had resumed, but there were still delays.
Delays were expected until the aircraft was moved, FAA said via Twitter.
The left main landing gear was stuck in a grassland area, the authorities said. The aircraft had to be towed from the airport after the passengers went via stairs and buses to a terminal.
The FAA was on its way to starting an investigation, the agency said in a statement via Twitter.
