United Airlines flights destined for Hawaii return to SFO in the middle of the journey

Flight 694 out of San Francisco was originally en route to Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. But to the great dismay of the passengers, the United Airlines flight was diverted back to San Francisco in the middle of the trip on Sunday.

Boeing 737-900 twin-terminating jets were expected to land at Kona International Airport at around 1 p.m. Hawaiian time. Instead, the SFO arrived at 14.44, over three hours after the first departure.

In an opinion, the airline said the aircraft was experiencing a mechanical problem and then had to turn around.

"The plane landed safely, and customers usually planned," it reads.

"Customers will continue to Kona on an alternate flight with a new crew. We compensate customers and apologize for any inconvenience."
