Requested by one challenge from Tesla founder Elon Musk, the UN has released a plan for how they will spend nearly $ 7 billion to fight hunger around the world.
The proposal comes three weeks after David Beasley, executive director of the United Nations World Food Program, or WFP, told CNN that about 2% of Musk’s net worth of $ 279 billion could help end hunger. He later specified in a tweet that a donation of 6.6 billion dollars would “avert famine” next year.
After watching the interview, Musk said on Twitter that he would immediately sell shares in the electric car company, which is worth more than 1[ads1] trillion dollars, if the UN could explain how the money would “solve” hunger.
“If WFP can describe in this Twitter thread exactly how $ 6 billion will solve the world’s hunger, I’ll sell Tesla shares right now and do it,” tweeted Musk, who Bloomberg ranks as the richest person in the world.
Beasley defended his comments in a response to Musk on Twitter and told the entrepreneur that “with your help we can bring hope, build stability and change the future”.
“Let’s talk,” Beasley tweeted to Musk, a native of South Africa. “It’s not as complicated as Falcon Heavy, but too much is at stake not to at least have a conversation.”
About $ 3.5 billion of a donation of about $ 6 billion will go to buy food for people mainly in Africa and the Middle East, including Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, South Sudan and Yemen, according to the UN. The money will also finance the distribution of food in these and other countries by plane, river or truck.
In all, the UN said the proposed plan would feed 42 million starving people. The WFP proposal also requires:
- To spend $ 700 million on food voucher programs in 43 countries where such assistance does not currently exist, including “office and satellite office facilities and their security, and monitoring distributions and results, to ensure that assistance reaches the most vulnerable.”
- Spend $ 2 billion on cash and food stamps in countries where these programs already exist.
- Spend $ 400 million on strengthening global supply chain logistics and creating a monitoring system to track worldwide hunger.
The proposal does not break down how much money, if any, will go to fighting hunger in the United States
The UN stressed that $ 6 billion would not eradicate world hunger. But the money would provide one meal a day to millions of people facing famine, according to the organization.
Nearly 283 million people in 80 countries are facing extreme hunger, said WFP, up from 135 million people in 58 countries in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic.
Africa is still the continent most affected by famine, experiencing food insecurity at a “crisis” level or worse, according to a WFP report from 2020. But even though the pandemic has fueled , the three main causes are war, extreme weather events and economic shocks.
The famine is increasing
Beasley twitret Monday that the number of people facing famine around the world continues to rise and that the UN proposal accepts anyone willing to help fund it.
“This hunger crisis is urgent, unique and avoidable,” Beasley tweeted, telling Musk that “we are ready to talk to you – and everyone else – who is serious about saving lives. The question is $ 6.6 billion to avert famine in 2022. “
Musk has so far not responded to the UN proposal. However, he has recently sold a significant number of his Tesla shares. Musk sold about 4.5 million shares last week, raising about $ 5 billion. A day later, he sold another 640,000 shares for about $ 687 million.
