Uber, Lift Drivers Strike for Higher Payments in Los Angeles

Drivers for ri-hailing companies were striking in Los Angeles Monday, requiring higher salaries.

After Uber had reduced the driver's salary by about 25 percent earlier this month, certain members of the leading senior group Rideshare Drivers United to strike for 25 hours from midnight Monday through 1[ads1]am on Tuesday, to claim their previous salary be recovered – and to ask for a minimum hourly wage.

Earlier this month, Uber per mile for drivers in LA and parts of Orange County reduced from 80 cents to 60 cents per kilometer reported the Los Angeles Times.

While the exact number of drivers beating on Monday is unclear, it is about 3,000 members in the Rideshare Drivers United's LA-based group.

"It's not fair, it's a joke. It doesn't make sense," says Karim Bayumi, who is part of the Rideshare Drivers United organization team. The 40-year-old father of two is a full-time driver with Uber and Lyft, who usually work six days a week from 8 am to 5 am

"It's not like prices were OK before, but this is totally unacceptable," he added. "We drivers are being exploited and exploited by these two giants companies. "

As part of the strike, Rideshare Drivers United asks to turn off their apps on Monday and for riders who are not going to use Uber or Lift services all day.

The ride-hailing company's drivers in New York City won a $ 17.22 minimum salary late last year, after spending.

As part of the strike, the group asks that they turn off their apps on Monday and for riders who do not use Uber or Lift services all day. There were also dozens of people picketing in Redondo Beach on Monday, with signs reading: "Restoring our dignity, restoring 25 percent."

Presidential contender Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) tweeted his support of the strike on Monday.

"I'm standing with Uber and Lift drivers beating LA," wrote Sanders. "A job should be enough to make a decent home in America, especially for those working for multi-billion dollar companies."

Bayumi said that while the price decline from Uber asked the strike, drivers are not satisfied with their wages from either Uber or Lyft.

A Uber spokesman said in a statement Monday that the company is introducing a new marketing feature and that the latest rate change is going to "make prices comparable to where they were in September, while giving drivers more control over how they earn allowing them to build a model best suited to their schedule. "On March 11, the per-rate for Uber tours in Los Angeles and Orange County increased, but the per-mile rate declined.

In 2016, hundreds of Uber drivers in New York City went on strike after the company reduced prices.

Because ranking leaders are classified as independent entrepreneurs rather than employees, it is more difficult for them to unite, according to the Los Angeles Times. But Bayumi hopes Rideshare Drivers United will grow beyond California and organize more drivers to stand together for their rights.

While this strike ends at 1pm on Tuesday, it is only the first of several measures to come, Bayumi said.

"I think what Uber and Lyft drivers are doing is a valuable service – we bring people home safely after a long night out, we take people to work," he said. "We're trying to live … we shouldn't struggle, scratching the pennies off the floor."
