DETROIT (AP) – The four-year contract between General Motors and United Auto Workers has expired as negotiations for a new deal continue.
Union officials told GM they would cancel the contract just before midnight Saturday, increasing the risk of a strike as early as Sunday night. Union members who worked Sunday were to report as planned.
It was a wrinkle. Around 850 UAW-represented caretakers working for their own company, Aramark, at eight GM plants went on strike Sunday. Factory workers cannot cross their poor lines.
UAW Vice President Terry Dittes (DIT-ez) tells members in a letter that the union and GM are far apart on financial issues. The lectures continued on Sunday.
Two groups of union leaders will meet Sunday to determine the next steps.
GM said that they are prepared to negotiate around the clock.
