For those who want to get their sugary beverage first thing in the morning, the Post Cereals and Hostess brands have just the thing: Twinkies Cereal.
The new breakfast buffet "replicates the distinctive flavor and familiar oblong shape of the gold-colored snack cake, and delivers delightful sweetness in every bite," the Post and Hostess announced Wednesday.
"We believe fans will find that not only does it taste good with milk, but also outside the bowl," said Josh Jans, brand manager for grain partnerships at Post Consumer Brands.
Long Nutrition Physiologists were launched, Twinkies were launched during the Great Depression and have the most loyal consumer among the hostess brands, which include Ding Dongs and Ho Hos. The popularity of the treat rose in the 1950s, in part because of the sponsorship of "Howdy Doody," the children's television show.
A non-fire legend who kept the Twinkies would not go bad for years had Americans stored them in bomb rooms and lunch boxes, and in 1996 the Twinkies were placed in the nation's millennial time capsule.
That said, the Twinkies briefly seemed like a snack for the history slopes. Healthier eating trends and labor problems helped to push the hostess into bankruptcy in 2012 only to be brought back to life with a cash infusion from private equity investors.
The theme of junk food for breakfast is not novel for either the Post or the hostess, who count Honey Bowl and Donette's cereal among their previous collaborations.
It's also not the first time the hostess has appeared to take advantage of the cake, with the company springing fried Twinkies in public in 2016.
