Turks leave the lira for dollars as the currency crisis deepens
ISTANBUL — A currency crisis here shatters Turks’ confidence in their government’s ability to control the economy, prompting masses of people to buy US dollars and sending crowds out into the streets to oppose President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s policies.
Rebel police lined the streets of parts of Istanbul as the country prepared for a third night of widespread protests over Mr Erdogan’s inability to stop a sharp fall in the Turkish lira. The weakening of the lira has undermined almost two decades of economic gains that had given Turks a sense that they were joining the world club of top economies.
