Turkey will not go unpunished if it receives S-400 air defense missiles from Russia, a US government department officially told CNBC on Tuesday.
"We emphasize that Turkey will face very real and negative consequences if it completes its S-400 delivery," CNBC said.
The United States has threatened sanctions against Turkey over its purchase of the weapons, as it says, contrary to NATO's obligations. But it's not clear when Washington will approve any action or how hard they can be.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan last month stated that US President Donald Trump said Turkey had been treated unfairly in an attempt to obtain a US air defense system and sanctions would not be implemented. The Turkish President has blamed the threats to officials outside the White House and says he has good relations with Trump.
Turkey will deliver the S-400 system already this week, according to press releases. 1
