U.S. Trade officials rejected Tesla's bid for relief from President Donald Trump's 25% tariffs on the Chinese-made computer "brain" of his model 3 vehicle, one of more than 1[ads1],000 product names related to China's industrial development plans.
According to documents filed by US Trade Representative's office (USTR) and reviewed by Reuters, Tesla and other tariff requests for Chinese-produced products from aircraft parts to biotechnological instruments, they were all denied because they were considered "strategically important" for "Made in China 2025 "program.
Tesla did not return requests for comment. Tesla has a separate pending exclusion request for duties on the Chinese-made model 3 center screen.
The company, in a security filing on Monday, said that "our costs for producing our vehicles in the United States have also been affected by import duties on some components sourced from China."
The refusals illustrate a systematic approach of the Trump administration to to counteract China's efforts to develop high-tech industries it claims had benefited from theft and forced transfer of US intellectual property. 19659002] Made in China 2025, a program to boost China's skill in 10 strategic industries now dominated by the United States, is at the heart of trade negotiations and US demands for sweeping changes in China's trade, industry and intellectual property rights.
