The treats you kill your dog can make you or your family sick, says the CDC

(CNN) – Can they treat you to feed your dog, make you or your family sick? The American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say yes.

On Wednesday, the CDC reported that it and the Food and Drug Administration are investigating an outbreak of salmonella in 13 states – and it has been linked to contact with pig dander's treats. [19659003] 45 people in California, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Wisconsin have been infected. Twelve have been hospitalized.

In CDC interviews with 38 of those infected, 34 said they had been in contact with a dog before they became ill. Separately, 1[ads1]7 people with the 24 interview reported contact with pig ear dogs treats or dogs fed the treats.

Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development officials sampled pig ears for salmonella. They have identified some strains in the therapists, but it is unclear whether they are the same strains that cause the infection.

The CDC recommends that people always wash their hands when handling pet food or treats, store pet food away from human food and never let pets lick their mouths, faces or open wounds.
