EU antitrust regulators will investigate Amazon, the world's largest online store, to see if the use of other vendors' data violates the competition rules, the commission said Wednesday.

The Competition Authority Margrethe Vestager said that the EU opened a formal investigation to determine how Amazon uses data from independent dealers who sell at the company's marketplace. The investigation deals with the Amazon's "dual role" as both a dealer and a marketplace, said Vestager.

"On the basis of the Commission's preliminary conclusion, Amazon looks to use competitive sensitive information ̵[ads1]1; about marketers, their products and market transactions," said Vestager.

In a statement, Amazon said: "We will fully cooperate with the European Commission and continue to work hard to support businesses of all sizes and help them grow."
