BIG CHANGES MAY BE COMING SOON FOR THE CITY OF DES MOINES AT SIX. CITY LEADERS ANNOUNCED A PLAN TODAY TO MOVE ITS STAFF OUT OF THE OFFICES THEY HAVE USED FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS. THEIR NEW HOME, THE COUNTRYSIDE BUILDING AT 12TH AND LOCUST KCCI, IS BEAU BOWMAN IS LIVE THERE TONIGHT WITH A TIMELINE OF WHEN CITY STAFF COULD. WE WILL STAND THE CITY COUNCIL MUST APPROVE THE PURCHASE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE CITY AND THE COUNTRY COUNTY ON MONDAY AT THEIR REGULAR MEETING. BUT CITY EMPLOYEES SHOULD NOT MOVE IN UNTIL AT LEAST 2024. THIS BUILDING SHOULD SUIT US LIKE A GLUT. THE CITY OF DES MOINES NOW PLANS TO MOVE ALMOST ALL CITY EMPLOYEES TO THIS BUILDING AT 1200 LOCUST STREET, THE OLD COUNTRYSIDE BUILDING HAS BEEN EMPTY SINCE THE PANDEMIC. THAT’S WHY THEY WANT TO SELL IT. AND A PARKING GARAGE TWO BLOCKS SOUTH OF CITY FOR 40.6 MILLION, 40 MILLION IS THE ACQUISITION COST. WE KNOW WE WILL COME TO COSTS ABOVE AND BEYOND THAT AFTER THEY END THE AGREEMENT IN JUST NINE MONTHS, THE CITY WILL START DESIGNING AND BUILDING NEW OFFICE SPACE. AND BY 2024 THEY HOPE TO MOVE EMPLOYEES FROM THE ARMORY BUILDING, TOWN HALL AND EVEN THE POLICE STATION, AND LEAVE THE TOWN OF OSTLAND. BUT OPENING UP THESE SITES FOR REVELATION DOWN THE ROAD. IT IS ONE THAT IS A HISTORICAL REHAB. THAT AGAIN I THINK WILL BRING A LOT MORE LIFE TO THAT DISTRICT THAN WE CURRENTLY JUST HAVE AN OFFICE SPACE FIVE DAYS A WEEK. THE CITY OF DES MOINES FIRST MOVED INTO WHAT IS NOW THE OLD CITY HALL 120 YEARS AGO. THEY HOPE THIS NEW SPACE WILL LAST JUST AS LONG, IF NOT LONGER, AS WE HAVE KNOWN. WE STAY IN OUR FACILITIES FOR A LONG TIME, 100 YEARS. SO THIS BUILDING BEHIND US, THIS IS GOING TO BE CITY OFFICE SPACE FOR ANOTHER HUNDRED YEARS. NOW THE CITY SAYS THE POLICE DEPARTMENT WILL BE THE LAST TO MOVE TO THIS NEW LOCATION. COUNTRYWIDE PLANS TO KEEP THE BUILDING DIRECTLY EAST OF THIS ONE AT 1100 LOCKUST. City of Des Moines leaders said Friday they are looking at buying one of the National Insurance buildings on Locust Street downtown. The city will pay $30 million for the national building. City leaders say the purchase will allow them to consolidate all city government agencies in the city into one facility. But city employees will not move into this building until at least 2024. City services are currently spread across five locations. The city hopes to relocate employees from the armory, city hall and even the police station. Nationwide has consolidated all its staff into another building near the city centre. The city council will discuss the plan at Monday night’s meeting.
