Overhead storage is not your coat closet.
That̵[ads1]7;s the message from a travel influencer couple, Matt and Hillary, whose TikTok account @hillnpoo has 42,000 followers.
They posted a video saying that airline passengers should not put their clothes or jackets in overhead luggage – and it sparked a heated debate.
In the video with the text: “Are we wrong to think that overhead jackets are a crime?”, a voiceover says:
“If you’re planning to fly in 2023, please don’t be the one filling up an entire overhead closet with your jackets. It is absolutely a waste of space. They can sit on your lap, or most airlines have hooks.”
The etiquette post shared followers and received over 600 commenters and more than 240,000 views.
One dissenter wrote: “Considering the crew asks you to put your jacket there, it makes no sense not to.”
Another said: “Well, that’s not exactly right. I tried a few times to hold it on my knees and the flight attendant put it in overhead storage.”
But of course, many agreed with the influencers, including some who claimed to be a frequent flyer.
“As someone who used to travel over 200 days a year – I’ve been on many flights when the attendant says not to put coats in overhead bins,” the commenter wrote.
Another person, who said they were a flight attendant, agreed and made a compromise that was popular in the comments section.
“Hi, I’m a flight attendant, I hate it when passengers put their coats in the bin. Please wait until the luggage is in the bin, then slide the coat in.”
With the summer travel season heating up, incidents of bad airline behavior are hitting the news.
A young woman recently took to Reddit to complain about a flight where a passenger had changed her baby’s poopy diaper on the tray table.
On a Frontier Airlines flight, a passenger allegedly hit a flight attendant with the intercom phone.
