Texas expands access to medical marijuana | Policy

Marijuana lawyers applaud the new law.

"Cannabis is effective medicine for many patients suffering from disturbing medical conditions," said Heather Fazio, director of Texans for Responsible Marijuana Policy, Friday. "HB 3703 represents a positive step towards a functional medical cannabis program, but unfortunately, millions of Texas families still benefit from legitimate access."

Bill the author, Rep. Stephanie Klick, R-Fort Worth, is a registered nurse who ruled the state's original Texas Compassionate Use Act in law. The Texas Senate sponsor, medical aid Donna Campbell, said during the debate that their legislation was just a small extension of the state's current medical marijuana law.

"I'm narrow in making this so it gives us some assurance, and we didn't run into anything with unintended consequences," said Campbell, R-New Braunfels.

Cannabis law was a major problem in the legislative group in 201[ads1]9 as wrapped up on 27 May. While a bill to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana failed, legislators approved legislation that allows farmers to grow hemp as an industrial crop and also legalizes low-THC cannabidiol, or CBD, products. This bill was signed in law on June 10 and entered into force immediately.

Gouverneur has until Sunday to decide whether to sign or veto the bill's legislators this year.
