By updating their website now and stopping model 3 orders, Tesla has released an important paragraph about today's announcement over the next few hours – showing that it is related to model 3
Update: Tesla has now stopped all customized orders before the announcement.
Earlier this week Elon Musk said that Tesla will make an announcement today at 14:00, and we have speculated what it could have been since.  Today, Tesla updated its site a few hours before the announcement of stopping Model 3 orders.
When you click on the order page on model 3, buyers are instead told that "the wait is almost over" and that "good things are launching at 1[ads1]4.00."

Update: Tesla has now closed all custom orders, including model S and model X.
We will update and post more information about the new launch in the next few hours as we learn more. Stay tuned.
I must assume that Tesla will launch new options for model 3. That was the only thing that would justify pausing orders.
I felt it was a little early for the model 3 base battery based on recent comments from Elon that it is coming towards the middle of the year.
Although we are almost in March, it may make sense to start taking orders for the basic version if it starts in the next 2-3 months.
