Tesla gradually releases its new Sentry Mode feature to deter burglary, and we learn new, interesting details about the mode when it reaches more owners of Model 3.
As we reported last week, Tesla launched the new Sentry Mode to Protect against burglary and theft.
The system uses the Autopilot cameras to "detect potential threats" and it goes through various levels of alarms based on the "threats" discovered.
We got a first look
Now, Tesla Sentry Mode describes in a new warning when activated:
"Sentry Mode lets your car be aware of its surroundings while parked using sensors, microphones, cameras and computers While active, the Sentry Mode evaluates the risk of theft or vandalism, and records video, activates visual and auditory alarms, and sends you mobile alerts as needed. "
Some Tesla owners were concerned about the power used to operate the feature when the car is inactive.
While Tesla does not deepen on the drain as Sentry Mode has on the battery pack, the automaker notices that there is a minimum battery level required to activate the function.
The company wrote in the same warning:
Note: Extra battery power is consumed while Sentry Mode is active. To enable Sentry Mode battery level must be greater than 20%.
Storage of the recording if a threat was discovered was also another concern for some owners.
Since the Teslacam movie is stored on a USB drive inside the car, some feared that a thief could also steal it.
In the note, Tesla says it temporarily supports recording to its network:
"Sentry Mode will send recorded recordings to Tesla for temporary backup and function enhancement. You can enable or disable it collection at any time via the DATA SHARING video clip setting in Controls> Settings> Security and Safety. Please refer to your user manual for more information. "
The initiative should prevent recording from being lost if the USB drive is lost.
Tesla slowly releases the new Sentry Mode to its fleet. It may take some time to propagate to the wider fleet.
CEO Elon Musk said that Tesla will release a new update to make it easier to activate the feature on parking.
With some upgrades, I think Sentry Mode could be a very useful feature, and an impressive one to be pushed just by software over-the-air.
In the note, Tesla also wrote:
"Sentry Mode will play loud music when the alarm is triggered. Avoid leaving motive creatures in the vehicle when Sentry Mode is active."
"Sentient Beings." What kind of automaker is communicating like that ? It is funny.
