Tesla is adding a rare new market to its Powerwall distribution. The home battery pack is now available for installation in Japan.
When it comes to demand, Powerwall has been an extremely popular product for Tesla, but distribution has been somewhat limited.
Earlier this year, a report showed that Tesla Powerwall captures a majority of the thoughts in the home battery market, but Tesla cannot supply demand.
Tesla said that the energy division was starving in battery cells last year when it focused the battery supply to Model 3 production.
In 2019, the company began to grow, and earlier this year it announced that Powerwalls is now installed in over 50,000 locations.
However, installations are still limited to only a few markets where it feels economical based on electricity costs and connecting the home battery pack to a solar installation.
Tesla has gradually introduced Powerwall to new markets, and today announced that the product is coming to J apan.
Shinji Asakura, Tesla Country Manager for Energy Products in Japan, told the media in Japan (via Reuters):
Tesla believes that the Japanese home battery market has a huge potential for growth.
Management said the introduction will come as input tariffs to guarantee minimum solar energy prices will begin to expire later this year.
Aside from the economic benefits, Asakura also noted that Powerwall's backup capabilities may be popular in Japan where natural disasters ̵
Tesla Powerwall costs 990,000 yen ($ 9,135) in Japan with all the necessary hardware.
