Super Mario Bros Movie Hits $20M Monday, Lighting Record – Deadline

The Easter weekend may be over, but that didn’t mean it was over for Illumination/Universal’s Super Mario Bros Film which earned an amazing $20.1 million on Monday. That figure is easily the best Monday ever for an Illumination title, beating out Monday’s $19.6 million Sing on 26 December 2016.

Monday was a rich day for cinema-going with a good number of primary schools at 40% during the spring break, down from 80% on Good Friday. Colleges on break yesterday rose 10%, down from Friday’s 31%.

The six-day running total of Super Mario Bros is $224.7 million. It wouldn’t be shocking, especially how Universal has kept these family pictures as wide releases for months, even when they hit PVOD, to see Super Mario Bros reached $500M-$600M at the end of its domestic run.

Among other heights, Super Mario Bros is the second best Monday ever for a Universal title after Jurassic Worldis $25.3 million (June 15, 2015). For April, Super Mario Bros had the third best Monday ever Avengers: Endgame (April 29, 2019) which earned $36.8 million and Avengers: Infinity War (April 30, 2018) which grossed $24.7 million. Super Mario then also the second highest Monday of 2023 so far behind Avatar: The Way of the Water‘s (January 2) $21.4 million.

Amazon/Artists Equity/Skydance Sports/Mandalay’s Air saw $1.5 million yesterday in fourth place, bringing its six-day total to $21.7 million. Lionsgate John Wick: Chapter 4 ranked second with $1.64 million yesterday on its third Monday for a total of $148.5 million. Paramount/eOne’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves earned $1.54 million in third place on its second Monday for a $63.1 million run.
