Every August, the 9to5Mac is flooded with people asking if they should buy last year's iPhone model or not, or wait to see what Apple has in store for September. Even if you don't care about the new technology coming in this year's new iPhone, the answer is always clear: wait.
The iPhone XS and iPhone XR were announced just over a year ago, and even 11 months later they are excellent devices. They are even the best smartphones the money can buy right now. So why should you wait to get your hands on one?
iPhone XS and iPhone XR are expensive – with iPhone XR starting at $ 749, iPhone XS starting at $ 999, and iPhone XS Max starting at $ 1,099. Although you will almost certainly pay for it through some kind of upgrade program, it is difficult to justify spending so much money on products that are almost one year old.
The iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro are all rumored to be on schedule for a release in mid-September. Apple's event is likely to be held on September 10, with hardware releases to follow shortly. With that in mind, it's hard to recommend anyone to go out and pay full price for the iPhone XS and iPhone XR in the next few weeks.
First and foremost, you'll probably end up getting a better deal if you wait another month.
Right now it is unknown which of the 2018 iPhone models Apple will continue to sell after the release of iPhone 11, but at least one of them will probably hold itself at a lower price point. Furthermore, retailers will look to remove stock of older iPhone models leading into the holiday shopping season.
It is certainly possible that after the launch of iPhone 11 next month, Apple will lower the price of the iPhone XS and iPhone XR by $ 100 – with third-party retailers taking things even further.
As we head into the holiday season, be sure to follow 9to5Toys for details on iPhone sales – we'll probably see discounts before during last year's models. What to expect from the iPhone 11?
The iPhone 11 is expected to be a replacement for the iPhone XR, offering new color choices, a dual camera design and the new Apple A13 processor. In the meantime, the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are expected to use triple lens camera setup and a new range of camera features to pair with that hardware.
There are also rumors of a crush-proof design and more. Check out our complete guide for all the details.
Even if you wait a few months and still end up buying last year's iPhone XS instead of the shiny new iPhone 11, you will be glad you did. The iPhone XS and iPhone XR are excellent devices, but you'll regret paying full retail for them without waiting a few weeks to see what kind of price drops are in store.
