Scientific publisher IEEE bans Huawei reviewers – TechCrunch

Following a temporary ban, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, known as the IEEE, announced on Monday that disguises to editors and peer reviewers working for Huawei and its affiliates.

Repentance is yet another example of regulatory murkiness in the trade negotiations between the United States and China. In response to US orders to carry US companies from operating Huawei-based non-government-owned businesses, the New York-based research organization restricted Huawei last week and affiliates from its peer review process.

The IEEE then said that the ban should have a "minimal impact" on its members around the world and assured that Huawei could still submit papers, participate in IEEE host conferences and participate in other activities open to the public.

"Our first, more restrictive approach was motivated solely by our desire to protect our volunteers and our members from legal risk. With the clearance received, this risk has been addressed," said the IEEE in a statement.

The abbreviations, but short-lived, has triggered a major setback in the global academic community, with professors from top-level universities such as Zhang Haixia at Beijing University resigning from the IEEE boards in protest against the ban.
