Scary State: 90.5 percent of plastic is not recycled
LONDON (AP) – The growing crisis in plastic waste has gained the attention of Britain's royal statistical community, which chose 90.5 percent – the share of plastic waste that has never been recycled – as its international statistics for the year. [19659002] The community, who selects a winner from nominations made by the audience, picked the statistics generated in a UN report based on the work of American academics Roland Geyer, Jenna R Jambeck and Kara Lavendel Law.
Public awareness of the problem has grown, especially after the filmmaker David Attenborough's documentary "Blue Planet II" showed sea turtles wrapped in plastic among other cruelties.
Geyer says he was honored by the recognition and hopes that "it will help to draw attention to the problem of plastic pollution affecting almost all societies and ecosystems globally."
