Rotating California outages almost certain
Rotating outages across California are almost certain, according to the state’s grid operator. On a day of increased energy use amid record high temperatures, the California Independent System Operator, or Cal ISO, issued an alert saying power outages “may be imminent.” Tuesday is also the seventh day in a row that a Flex Alert, a voluntary call to conserve energy, has been issued. Pacific Gas & Electric Co. said in a tweet that it was aimed at preparing for possible power outages. That blackout started at 5 p.m. These outages in Davis are heat related, but not related to the rotating outages. PG&E said in a response to KCRA 3 that the utility will sometimes “proactively disable” some of the equipment to “prevent safety and system hazards.” There is no estimated time of restoration for Davis. B runs on generators. SMUD was asked to save energy from 16.00 to 21.00. There are no power cuts at the airport. 17:49: An emergency alert was sent to mobile phones urging people to conserve energy to avoid the risk of power outages. 5:30 p.m.: The new all-time high for downtown Sacramento is 116 degrees as of 5:30 p.m., KCRA 3 meteorologist Heather Waldman reports.
