One of the super-irritating headaches that goes hand in hand with string cutting and the era of streaming video entertainment on demand is the maintenance of multiple account logins across services such as Netflix, Hulu and the like. This will undoubtedly be even more frustrating as new streaming services from companies like Apple, Disney and WarnerMedia enter the picture, which Roku has attempted to address as part of a number of tweaks included in the Roku OS 9.1 update as started rolling out to users today.
In a company's blog post, the Roku leader Ilya Asnis explained that there are many new features that include voice enhancements, updates to Roku search, an updated guest mode, and a particularly useful automatic account connection feature. 1
As to what the new update brings, the new voice search makes it easier to dive into content faster. Now, when you use your voice to search, movies and TV shows available on the Roku Channel – in addition to those available on Roku Premium Subscription Services – most times will start playing automatically. If automatic voice command playback is not available for any reason, Roku says it will display "objective search results" that rank by price, with multiple channels expected to support this functionality soon.
Talking about speech thanks to New update, you can also do things like saying "replay" to go back a few seconds. You can also now verbally turn closed captions on and off.
At the same time, the function previously called Auto Sign Out Mode allows guests to log on to subscription channels with their own credentials. It's helpful if you say you have a friend who stays over. The OS update now enables or disables this feature for specific Roku devices you own and can be managed through the My Associates section of the "My Account" page of Roku.com. You can also use it to sign a guest out of a unit if they may have left early.
Per Ilya, the software update is available on selected Roku streaming players today and is expected to roll out to all supported players in the coming weeks. In addition, Roku TV models are expected to receive the update this summer.
