Reddit boss tells employees subreddit blackout ‘will pass’

Hi Snoos,

As of last night, about a thousand subreddits have gone private. We expect many of them to return by Wednesday, as many have said as much. Although we knew this was coming, it is still a challenge and we have our work cut out for us. A number of Snoos have been working around the clock, adapting to infrastructure loads, engaging with local communities and responding to the myriad of issues associated with this blackout. Thanks, team.

We have not seen any significant revenue impact so far and will continue to monitor.

There is a lot of noise with this one. Among the noisiest we̵[ads1]7;ve seen. Please note that our teams are involved, and like all explosions on Reddit, this one will pass. The most important thing we can do right now is to stay focused, adapt to challenges and keep moving forward. We absolutely must send what we said we would. The only long-term solution is to improve our product, and in the short-term we have some critical upcoming mod-tool launches to manage.

While the two biggest third-party apps, Apollo and RIF, along with a couple of others, have said they plan to shut down at the end of the month, we’re still in talks with some of the others. And as I mentioned in my post last week, we will exempt accessibility-focused apps and so far have agreements with RedReader and Dystopia.

I’m sorry to say this, but please be aware of using Reddit gear in public. Some people are very upset and we don’t want you to be the subject of their frustrations.

Again, we’ll get through it. Thanks to all of you for helping us with that.
