Quick-thinking CHP officers Stop Tesla on autopilot with mandatory DUI driver sleeping on wheel in Redwood City
Two California Highway Patrol Officers came up with an on-site technique to stop a speedy Tesla Model S with an allegedly drunken driver who slept behind the wheel of the 101 Freeway in Redwood City on Friday, said the authorities.
The meeting happened just before 4.30pm on the southbound highway near Whipple Avenue, said the cogeneration price in a written statement.
The officers saw the car traveling around 70km / h and realized that the driver seemed to be unconscious, officials said. The driver showed no response when the officers activated emergency lights and sirens while they were right behind Tesla in an attempt to pull it over.
"Officers then position their patrol car in front of Tesla and started to brake right in front of Tesla hoping that the" driver assistant "function had been activated and therefore Tesla would slow to a stop when the patrol car came to a halt," according to the statement.
They managed to lower the car. The pilot car came to a complete stop.
After he finally managed to raise the driver, officials determined that he was under the influence of alcohol, CHP officials said. Alexander Samek, 45, from Los Altos was arrested with suspicion of DUI.
"We can not confirm this time if the" driver's power "feature was activated, but considering the vehicle's ability to slow to a stop when Samek fell asleep, it seems that the feature" driver trainer "may have been active at that time," said the statement.
