Public closure set of airport delays as F.A.A. Announces staff shortages

Substantial flight delays were curled across the Northeast on Friday due to lack of air traffic controllers due to government shutdown, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The delays were about to roll along the east coast and now as far north as Boston. But La Guardia was the only airport that had been shut down for departure from other cities because it was so crowded with planes that took off and land on a weekday morning. Delays on flights to La Guardia were on average nearly an hour and a half, F.A.A. so.

The delays seemed to be easier late Friday morning.

F.A.. said it was slowing down traffic in and out of the airports due to staffing issues at two of its eastern air traffic control offices, one near Washington and one in Jacksonville, Fla. These facilities control air traffic at high altitudes. [19659002] The agency said there had been a slight increase in the number of controllers who became ill at these facilities Friday morning.

The control towers at the airports serving New York City and the central air traffic facility on Long Island monitoring that these airports were fully manned, said a person who had been briefed on the situation.

"The president is informed and we are monitoring the ongoing delays at some airports," said Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Science Press Secretary. "We are in regular contact with officials of the Department of Transport and the FAA"

In Washington, Democratic leaders pointed to President Trump and blamed him for the decline in air travel.

"The #TrumpShutdown ] has already pushed hundreds of thousands of Americans to the break," Nancy Pelosi spoke on Twitter. "Now also our airspace pushes to the breakpoint. @realDonaldTrump stop bringing security, safety and well-being into our nation in danger. Re-open government now!" 2. House Democrat, echoed the speaker – and also sought to blame Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader.

"The Trump-McConnell Suspension is not a game and has real consequences for our economy and millions of Americans' well-being," said Mr. Hoyer in a statement and adds: "If this closure does not end immediately, the detrimental effect will will continue to grow. "

At La Guardia, Amy Howell of Indianapolis, who was waiting for a flight home on the Delta Air Lines scheduled to leave at 11.30, said," I can't worry about things I can't control. But I would like to come home. "

Ms. Howell does not blame anyone for the government's closure." I am not angry, "she said." But I would like to see my family. "

Mayor Bill de Blasio learned about La Guardia airport issues during a radio interview Friday when he attended the United States Conference of Mayors in Washington.

"I wish I could say I was shocked. But this is the cost of the closure, says Mr. de Blasio, adding that for several days there have been warnings about potential staffing issues in air traffic control and security. "What a tragic reality," he said. "It's horrible."

The trade union representing airline companies on Friday said they had warned that the long-term closure of the government would damage the country's airline.

"The aviation system relies on the security personnel who do it," the union said in a statement. "They have done incredible heroic work, even as they are betrayed by the government that employs them. They are tired, worried and distracted – but they will not risk our security. Therefore, the planes will stay on the ground."
