Consumption of food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infe cation that primarily affects older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant and newborns. Rarely, people outside these risk groups are affected.

Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle pain, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and cramps sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

An invasive infection spreads throughout the gastrointestinal tract. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth or life-threatening infection in the newborn. In addition, severe and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics. Persons in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months of eating contaminated food should seek medical advice and tell health professionals about eating the contaminated food.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be in institutional freezers. Institutions that have purchased these products are encouraged not to serve them. These products must be discarded or returned to the point of purchase.

FSIS routinely performs recall efficiency checks to verify that recall companies are notifying customers of the recall and that measures have been implemented to ensure that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the distribution lists / retailers will be posted on the FSIS website.
