Porsche showcases the interior of its first EV ahead of the September 4 reveal

Porsche has shown the first images of the screen-loaded cockpit of Taycan, the company's first electric vehicle and the tip of the spear of parent company Volkswagen's attempt to distance itself from Dieselgate with a massive push into EVs.

While other modern Porsches have a mix of touch screen and touch-sensitive control panels, Taycan will take that idea a step further. The car can be optional to have as many as three screens strewn across the dashboard in addition to two touch-sensitive panels to control things like heat and air conditioning.

Two touch screens come as standard on Taycan. The first is the digital instrument cluster, which measures 1[ads1]6.8 inches and is curved so that it can be easily seen through the steering wheel, with touch-sensitive parts on the outer edges. There is also a 10.9-inch central display where the driver can tinker with the car's settings or dial up the integrated Apple Music app. Porsche will add a third touch screen in front of the passenger for a price that has not yet been revealed.

Drivers and passengers will be able to access the car's climate settings through a more modernized version of the touch-sensitive center console panel Porsche has used in cars such as the Panamera and Cayenne. The 8.4-inch touch panel uses haptic feedback to notify users that their touch has registered. Another 5.9-inch touch panel can also be placed on the back of the center passenger rear console.

Ivo van Hulten, Porsche's director of interior design style, states in the company's press release that Taycan's interior was designed with a "less is more" approach. While there is certainly less happening than in, say, the interior of a modern Mercedes-Benz, Taycan is no exercise in minimalism. There are fewer physical buttons than in most Porsches, and the company introduces a voice control feature that can be triggered by saying, "Hey Porsche." But it is still far from the strong design of something like the Tesla Model 3. [19659007] Image: Porsche

Porsche has not been shy about the Taycan price (it will start around $ 90,000) or some of the specifications (it will use 800-volt battery technology to allow fast charging up to 350 kW, and has somewhere between 200 and 300 miles, for example). But the German carmaker will release all details when the car is unveiled on September 4, which is almost four years to the day since the car was first teased as the Mission E concept.
