RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) – The early bird gets the worm, but in this case it's a chicken sandwich from Popeyes.
Kristopher Belfrey stood outside the store before the doors had even opened and waited all morning to get his hands on the much-awaited sandwich that has been a trend on social media.
"I woke up this morning, kissed the kids and told their mother that I was going. She said this early, and I was like yes," Belfrey said. "It's going to be crazy, so I called my mate from work, and he decided to meet me up here around 8:50, where around then stopped and got gas and coffee and got me up here."
Even people from out of state traveled to this Popeyes branch for a chance to taste the fried goodness.
Popeyes is now open for business serving their famous chicken sandwiches, and people are as eager as Dahlia Haliburton.
"Oh my gosh I I'm so excited," says Haliburton. "I've been waiting for this chicken sandwich to be like all the other states, and we're getting it here now, so I'm really excited. I ordered five, so I'm a little greedy."
The store has been preparing for weeks, knowing that today was going to be big. CEO Kelli Burnett wants to make sure the launch went smoothly.
"They told us we needed a designated sandwich maker. Initially, we were just as good, maybe we should see," says Burnett. "But definitely after the other stores launched the sandwich and we realized what the sales were, we added. I'd say I've added about 6-7 new employees over the last couple of weeks just to help us through that time and I will be here with us. "
The store not only hired more employees to keep up with the expected demand, they also added security to the watch list.
There were so many orders that it took about an hour for people
But when customers first got the sandwiches, they said it was worth the wait.
"Go to Popeyes, get all the chicken sandwiches, it'll be good," says Haliburton.
