Patent reveals new idea for Ford's self-propelled cars

Ford has designed a side mirror that gives a view of what is ahead of a car. Well, not the mirror in itself, but LIDAR that is hidden inside the house.

A patent application, first reported by CNET, shows the concept that could find the way to the automobile vehicles Ford plans to introduce as early as 2021[ads1]. [19659003] So far Ford's self-propelled test cars, like many automakers, have been equipped with ugly and not aerodynamic sensor arrays that include LIDAR pucker, which emit invisible laser beams to create 3D images of their surroundings.

Ford's self-propelled vehicle service platform will be a far-reaching ecosystem that enables a number of companies - from big to small - to get hold of it to improve their business.

Ford's self-propelled vehicle service platform will be a long-range ecosystem that enables a number of companies – from large to small – to tap in to improve their business.

The patent shows the vision of the LIDAR pair to cover the sides and front of the car but does not indicate where reverse-facing equipment should be installed. The housing has also been constructed of materials that reduce electromagnetic disturbances.

And while it may seem superfluous to have mirrors on an automobile that do not really need them, they are required according to current regulations and will allow a driver to take manual control.
