Passengers to the United States stranded after an emergency landing




November 20 (Reuters) – Dozens of people were stranded in Europe for the second night on Saturday after their plane to the United States made an emergency landing in Dublin after an engine failure, passengers said.

Brussels Airlines flight 1[ads1]01 was on its way from Brussels to New York on Friday when pilots issued a “pan-pan” message, indicating a problem less serious than a “mayday”, when flying at 37,000 feet , said aviation media and tracking sites.

Pilots of the 12-year-old Airbus A330-300 asked to be diverted to Shannon in Western Ireland, but switched to Dublin following instructions from the airline, according to the Aviation Herald, an independent website that tracks flight incidents.

The Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) unit Brussels Airlines confirmed that the aircraft had diverted after an engine warning and said that the pilots had followed the standard procedure.

Passengers praised the crew, but said they had been set up in hotels in Dublin before being flown to Paris on Saturday, where many then failed to get on crowded flights to New York days before Thanksgiving in the United States.

They included 18-year-old Maja Schmidt from Germany who was on her way to New York to work as an au pair.

“They had nothing vegetarian, so I ate bread and a cake,” she told Reuters. The airline said it had a policy of offering vegetarian meals and blamed the problem on a hotel.

Also on board was 22-year-old Oliver Sommerburg from near Hamburg in Germany, taking only the second flight of his life.

“It was madness, I do not know what is happening. They tell us nothing,” he said.

Bernard Vidick, a Belgian justice officer, said he had been denied a connecting flight in Paris because the plane carrying stranded passengers from Dublin was also delayed.

“This means we are blocked in Paris while we should be in New York. We are wasting two of the few vacation days we have,” he told Reuters.

“We have done our utmost to provide care for our passengers in difficult circumstances … but unfortunately we could not offer an optimal solution to everyone. We are very sorry for the inconvenience this caused to our customers,” said the airline.

Airlines serving the United States are preparing for congestion and delays next week as the Thanksgiving fall overlaps with a shortage of labor in the airlines.
