Officials: Regulations on banning electric scooters on Oklahoma City sidewalks will be enforced
OKLAHOMA CITY – Since their arrival in cities across the state earlier this year, officials say that scooters have taken Oklahoma by storm.
In August, the city leaders in Oklahoma City approved a ordinance that set rules for electric scooter companies.
The scheme would require companies to have recall permits defining the areas where they would park scooters every day before 7. The city also has the right to require that the proprietor use GPS technology that creates a virtual boundary, which would prevent scooters Used in prohibited areas.
But officials say that an ordinance for riders was already in place.
- Riders can not use a scooter on a sidewalk or trail. Bike paths and streets are OK.
- Riders must follow regular traffic rules that stop at stoplight and stop sign.
- Riders must always give to pedestrians. Make sure pedestrians come out of buildings or from parked cars.
- Riders are encouraged to park scooters near the sidewalks, or next to a bicycle rack. Please do not block the sidewalk, especially in places that would make it difficult for a disabled to use the sidewalks.
- Riders are encouraged to follow the guidelines and instructions from the scooter business.
Last week, the Oklahoma City Police took the effort to remind scooters about being aware of traffic laws.
The authorities say that the ordinance prohibiting scooters on the sidewalk in the city will be enforced due to potential danger to pedestrians. Officers say that users must also have a valid driver's license to drive a scooter on a road.
Scooters can not pass other cars between traffic lanes and you can not move between moving vehicles.
"If citizens choose to use the new scooters, we ask that they can use bike paths whenever possible. If a bicycle track is unavailable, we request that they operate the security on a bygate and comply with all traffic laws, "wrote the department on facebook.
Officials say they are considering ordinances to decide if they need to change.
