NYC Subway Crime: Straphangers flee train after passenger uses pepper spray in fight in Union Square

UNION SQUARE, Manhattan (WABC) — Train service has resumed after pepper spray was used during a fight on a subway car at Union Square station.

The incident was reported on Friday morning at 10am

Police say the incident caused passengers to attempt to flee the train and the station.

Police say a 77-year-old man was sitting on a southbound R train when he was pepper-sprayed during an unprovoked attack.

The suspect, a man, then fled the station.

The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he is expected to survive.

No one has been arrested and the investigation is ongoing.

MTA spokesman Michael Cortez released the following statement:

“After a brief suspension of service on lines serving Union Square due to the response of the FDNY and NYPD at that station, normal service has resumed. The cause of the incident that led to that response appears to be isolated.”[ads1];
