Newark Airport is shut down Saturday morning due to airport emergency, according to officials.

The Airport's official Twitter account said "due to an airport emergency there are currently no arrivals nor departures from Newark Airport."

Passengers are advised to check with their carrier before going to the international airport. Traffic destined for the airport is being delayed at its departure point, according to the Federal Aviation Administration website.

A call to officials at the Port Authority was not immediately returned.

The FAA website said there was a traffic management program implemented due to undefined aircraft incidents and that both arrivals and departures would experience 16 to 30 minutes delays.

Earlier this month, there were delays at the airport after a United Airlines passenger jet skidded off the runway
