New window blinds standards to prevent child death in power

Window blinds and coatings with wires pose a serious risk of injury or tightening to infant and toddler. But consumers are hopeful that new standards for window coverings that came into effect on Saturday prevent further tragedies.

The new standard requires stock products sold in stores and on the Internet to be wireless or have short wires, according to a press release from an industry group Window Covering Manufacturers Association.

It is a goal many parents had hoped for in the wake of accidents involving blinds that caused children to be severely injured or suffering from death by tightening.

"The new requirements of the Standard segment the market in custom and inventory and require all stock products sold in stores and online, to be wireless or have inaccessible or short wires," said Ralph Vasami, Executive Director of the Association.

This means that customized blind orders can still have long wires (for people who need them because of their height or disability). But since stockblinds account for more than 80 percent of those sold in stores, the blinds you see on the shelves now

Vasami states that data from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission show that short-term or wireless blinds will have the greatest impact on reducing strangulation risk for children.

When most people new parents are child-proof households they immediately cover power outlets and put security guards on door knobs and cabinets. nd wires are often overlooked as a potential hazard.

A study published in the journal Pediatrics found that from 1990 to 2015, 17,000 children under six or nearly two children a day were discontinued in the emergency situation for blinds involving blinds.
