New rule may end the sale of prone sleepers

Federal security officials are finally taking an important action against a baby product that Action News has warned you about since April.

Associated sleepers have been under fire by pediatricians and advocates for safety after 59 babies died in them. And now the Consumer Product Safety Commission has taken a critical action.

On Thursday it was announced that they are proposing a new rule that will virtually end the sale of prone sleepers. But unfortunately, the move is not coming soon enough for the Harmon family who are suing a company after their baby died in one of these products.

"All I remember is that he went up the stairs and screamed," said Lakin Harmon of Berks County. "She talks about Cayson's father, Jayme, who she says had put her son down for about 30 minutes.

" I took him out of his arms and put his chest to me and got him down on the floor and started CPR while Jamie called 91[ads1]1, "she said.

Cayson died that day, just three months old.

Five different prone sleepers have been recalled, including 4.7 million of Fisher-Price Rock's Plays. Feedback first occurred after reports of babies dying and many other prone sleepers, including Chicco Napper, are still readily available to buy.

"Families and caregivers should know that all prone sleep products are unsafe for infant use. If they have them in their own homes, they should remove them and they should not buy these products, "said Grace Brownbach of the US PIRG.

A new study published Thursday was conducted by an external expert employed by the Consumer Product Safety Commission confirms the danger of prone sleepers as pediatricians and security attorneys have warned CPSC for several years.

The study was included in the new CPSC proposal that would effectively prohibit existing models of prone sleepers.

Meanwhile, Cayson's parents have sued Chicco in court papers denying that the product is defective and saying it is not responsible for Cayson's death.

Chicco told Action News, "Safety is always ours top priority. To date, this is the only allegation we have heard about our toy scouts. "
