New report on what your zip code says about you

If you live in the core chunk of Seattle, you're likely to be an interest.

This isn't necessarily new information – indeed, as millennials become the largest living generation, it remains relatively hard for them to purchase a house in a hot market like Seattle. But a new breakdown from location intelligence company Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) shows just how to divide plays out.

ESRI broke down areas by zip codes, using a process called segmentation to merge geography with demographics and look for a description of the area's residents.

Using sources including the US census, American Community Survey, the double-base consumer survey from GfK MRI and ESRI's proprietary Updated Demographics, the company generates a tapestry segmentation with 67 segments, summary descriptions of what the "types" of people who live there.

The resulting map is geared typically to marketing professionals and business owners to provide them with a profiling tool.

"Segmentation provides an accurate, revealing look at your existing and prospective customers and their trade areas to provide the best marketing opportunities," ESRI data product manager Cathy Spisszak told the Houston Chronicle. "Segmentation can also reveal less profitable areas that you can avoid, thus enabling you to save time and marketing dollars."

How that looks at their actual map may not align with what you think about the place you live: When you click on a zip code, you can get information like the median income in that area, to a breakout or percentages or "types" according to ESRI.

And so while areas like Fremont, Wallingford and Capitol Hill are largely defined as "Metro Renters" "(young, mobile, and educated," among other things), there is also a breakdown of the other smaller groups that make up the areas ̵

1; with names like "Urban Chic," "Laptops and Lattes," and "Emerald City "(no relation).

And the amount of difference can speak to the make-up of the area: Sometimes the top profile assigned to a zip code is close (by a matter of a few percentage points), and other times it's worlds away. Medina is almost 100 percent "Top Tier," but Bellevue is the majority "Metro Renters" with a 20 percent difference between the next one down ("Top Tier").

We pulled some of the zip codes from around the Seattle -metro area:

98101 (contains: north Downtown, parts of Belltown)
