Ministry of Labor: Oracle shorted women, minorities by $ 400 million
Women and minority workers at Oracle workers lost at least $ 401 million in salaries from 2013 to 2016 because of what the US Department of Labor described as systematic discrimination from the tech giant.
The enterprise software company deliberately shows "extreme preference" for hiring Asian workers with a visa, because it also allows them to be underpayed, the work department charged in a new application in its ongoing lawsuit against Oracle.
As a result, the company hires some African-American or Spanish-speaking workers, but when it does, it drastically undermines both them and female workers, the agency said in the filing.
"Oracle has continued to systematically discriminate against employees and applicants based on gender and race," Laura Bremer, a labor ministry lawyer, told an administrative judge.
Oracle spokeswoman Julia Allyn refused to comment.
During the four-year period it studied, the Ministry of Labor discovered that 90% of the 500 graduate graduates Oracle employed to work in technical positions at their headquarters in Redwood City were Asian. Only six of the candidates were black and only five were Latin American.

But the company's discrimination went beyond new cabins, according to the reports. The company regularly relies on paying for women and minority workers on their previous salary, the work department charged, a move that often serves to continue different pay between them and white male workers, who are usually better paid.
