Straphangers at a subway station in Midtown were seconds away from potential damage when the escalators on an escalator shredded during rush hour – leaving a passenger "shaken."
"Still shaking. I heard a loud crash while I got up the escalator on 5thAv / 53rd St and saw this right in front of me. Could have shrunk the foot of someone," wrote Twitter user @ lolitapop9 .
The incident happened shortly after. 9am near Madison Avenue and 53rd Street E and M entrance. Straphangers were abandoned with a single ascending escalator, or with the opportunity to take the stairs.
"@ MTA @NYCTSubway you play with people's safety!" The user added.
The tunnel system responded to the tweet about 20 minutes later and sent four MTA workers to the station.
Other Twitter users quickly chatted, calling the latest "scary" and "scary" subway episode.
"The steps were trapped with the platoon. If any foot was caught, they could have been injured, but it did not happen, thank God," said an MTA employee at the subway station. "We'll try to get it fixed in the evening. It'll be out in the afternoon."
