Michigan Governor supports strike against GM workers

LANSING, MI (WILX) – Michigan's Prime Minister Gretchen Whitmer supports autoworkers who strike against General Motors.

On Monday, the Democrat visited United Auto Workers members who were picking up outside the Lansing Grand River facility, blocks from the state Capitol building.

Photos that her office posted on social media showed her a handshake and provided donuts.

Spokeswoman Tiffany Brown says Whitmer is closely following the strike and supports workers' rights to negotiate together for better wages, benefits, working conditions and more time to spend with families.

More than 49,000 unionized GM workers left work just after midnight Monday.

Whitmer says she is hopeful that UAW and GM can negotiate and ratify a new contract quickly, because getting autoworkers back on the job as quickly as possible is important to Michigan's economy.
