A special team of officers from the Miami-Dade Police Rapid Deployment Force unit will patrol Miami International Airport after a wild fight involving travelers and police who were caught on camera.
Officers will be at all terminals inside the airport in the event of another incident involving violence, officials said Tuesday.
The news comes after Monday’s incident at the airport, which ended with two men being charged with, among other things, violence against a police officer.
Miami Dade police officials said Mayfrer Serranopaca held on to a police officer’s arm and fought with him in a terminal. Officers arrested both Serranopaca and Alberto Yanez, who were also accused of taking part in the fight.
Airport staff said some Air Century Airlines passengers were going to the Dominican Republic and Cuba had been upset because their planes were delayed.
Detectives said Serranopaca jumped in front of a golf cart inside the airport and sat on the hood without moving. Then he will have a fight with the policeman.
The video showed a crowd gathering as the officer withdrew and pulled out his pistol and asked for a backup. No shots were fired, and police arrested both men.
