McDonald's was banned from the site near the old Rome bath
The famous "Golden Arches" have made Italy crazy, and as a result will no longer be able to build another restaurant in the capital.
The famous "Golden Arches" will not establish another store in Rome, with Italy's Ministry of Culture banning a McDonald's restaurant from being built near one of the famous landmarks.
A proposal for a new restaurant to be built next to the old Caracalla baths has been crushed by the minister who thought it would be disrespectful to serve burgers so close to archaeological wonders.
"The wonders of Rome must be protected," Rome Virginia Mayor Raggi said on Twitter about the decision.
The bathrooms are from the 3rd century and are located near the city center, near the Coliseum and other famous places around Rome.
The chain had hoped to build an 800-square-foot restaurant and got permission to do so. The area where the restaurant would be built is located near the bathrooms, the Coliseum and other places of historical significance.
McDonald's operates 40 locations in the Italian capital, some near landmarks including Piazza Navona, Piazza di Spagna – the Spanish Steps – and the Vatican, Reuters reported.
The country has 578 McDonald's locations, according to statista.com. Only Germany, France and the UK have more.
