McDonald's employee who defended himself from the customer speaks out | WBNS-10TV Columbus, Ohio

Days after a video from a McDonald's employee attacked by a customer, confused, she spoke to CBS affiliate WTSP to defend herself – and why workplace security needs to be improved in the fast food chain.

Yasmine James, 20, began working at McDonald's in St. Petersburg three months ago. On Monday, a customer became aggressive when she informed him that he had to ask for straw. After cursing and shouting at her, she said he leaned on the counter and attacked her.

"He grabbed me and it really scared me because I didn't know if he had a gun or a knife or whatever," James said. "When he grabbed me, my most important thing was to get him off the best way I knew. Just let me go. "

James, who learned to box as a teenager, fought back as colleagues stood by the idiot as seen in the virus video.

She said that her leader did not come to help, but did not fail them. She claimed that they have never been properly trained to handle troubled customers. She is now asking McDonalds to improve employee safety and training leaders to de-escalate similar situations.

"I don't want to be blamed on him, I will blame the way he was trained because he is not a bad leader," she said. "It was just when it happened, it was as if he didn't know what to do."

Daniel Taylor, 40, was arrested in connection with the attack. He was paid with two counts of single battery.

James lawyers want the charges elevated to the crime battery. They said they are exploring all legal opportunities.

"This is the last straw for violence against all workers and all women," she said.

In a statement issued Thursday, McDonald's said the "highest priority" is the security of everyone in the restaurant. It adds, "We stand by our employees everywhere, including our staff at this restaurant involved in this event."

Currently, James is taking leave because she is not comfortable with being "paranoid" and "scared" at her job.
